AEW Double or Nothing 2023 – Results and Review

Hello all my wrestling fans out there, I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend.  I am back from Las Vegas after seeing AEW Double or Nothing.  There has been a lot of conversation online about the event and the crowd.  I am here to give you my honest review of the event as well as see how we did in the results.  Before we get started, I just wanted to remind your our Top 10 Wrestling finishers video is out on YouTube, you can check out our channel by clicking here (subscribing and liking the video would help us greatly).  Also, we will be keeping up with our tally for the results, following WWE Night of Champions we are 6-1.  Without further ado, here is the AEW Double or Nothing 2023 Results and Review.

Hardy Party (Jeff, Matt and Hook) vs. Ethan Page and the Gunns

We get the Buy-In started with The Hardys and Hook vs Ethan Page and the Ass Boys.  This match was very difficult to watch, Hook was great but the Hardy Boys I feel need to retire.  Jeff went full on botchamania slipping off the ropes and it pains me to watch Matt Hardy walk/move around the ring.  It seems he is in so much pain.  On the line in this one was control of Ethan Page’s contract.  To close out this match we got Ethan Page solo in the ring with all three members of Hardy Party.  Twist of Fate, Twist of Fate, Redrum…. It is over, your winners and now in control of Ethan Page’s contract Hardy Party.  So far on the night we are 1-0.

AEW International Championship Blackjack Battle Royal: Orange Cassidy vs 20 AEW Wrestlers

This match threw us for a loop in attendance.  We had about 10 minutes to go before showtime and the wrestlers started making their way down to the ring.  It wasn’t what we were expecting as all of the crowd expected a Casino Battle Royal.  For those curious, the participants were The Butcher, The Blade, Kip Sabian (They were accompanied by Penelope Ford, no Bunny), The Best Amigos Chuck Taylor, Trent Beretta and Bandido, Ari Daivari, Tony Nese, Big Bill, Lee Moriarty, Jay White, Juice Robinson, Ricky Starks, Keith Lee, Swerve Strickland, Brian Cage, Dustin Rhodes, Komander, The Lucha Brothers Penta el Zero M and Rey Fenix, Orange Cassidy.  This was hard to follow at first and there was a lot of fighting on the outside and very little in the ring at first.

The match was very Lucha heavy for a bit and man did they deliver.  Komander was very impressive.  It took a bit to get to them but the final four were not who I assumed it would be but we got Cassidy, Swerve, Penta and Big Bill.  Also we though it would come down to Big Bill vs Cassidy but we were wrong again.  Big Bill took out Penta, it looked like he was about to toss OC out but Swerve comes from behind and takes out Bill.  OC recovers to try and dump Swerve but he is unable to.  These two had an amazing back and forth.  Finally both men are outside on the apron and Swerve is hanging on in a precarious position, Cassidy looking for the Orange Punch but just kicks his hands off the ropes and retains.  The Orange Reign continues with the International Championship.  This brings us to 2-0 to start off our Double or Nothing results.

Unsanctioned Match: Chris Jericho vs. Adam Cole

I am going to start off saying how disappointed in this match I was.  The build up was really good going into it.  The start of the match with everyone involved was great and Sabu off the top rope through a table brought me back to ECW.  Then everyone just left and it was Jericho and Cole.  The crowd really lost interest in this match.  It felt sluggish and labored.  Cole brought in a fire extinguisher to break the Walls of Jericho.  Cole gets back to his feet and goes off the rops and Jericho nails a Codebreaker on him then sprays him with the fire extinguisher and starts spraying it all over the ring.  He finally drops the extinguisher onto Cole which brings out Britt Baker, she has a Kendo Stick and goes to work on Jericho.  Saraya comes out and she takes a few lashings as well as Britt chases her to the back.

Back to the action, Jericho breaks out some long handcuffs/shackles.  He gets Cole into one and Cole is able to grab the other end and cuff himself to Jericho.  He hit the worst Panama Sunrise I have ever seen, it looks like there was no help from Jericho on this one.  Finally we have cole hit a knee to the back of the head, then wraps the chain around the leg and hits another.  He wasn’t done yet, he mounted Jericho and started wailing on him and Aubrey Edwards had enough and called it.  Adam Cole gets the W by stoppage.  This brings us to 3-0 on the night, not too bad!

AEW World Tag Team Championship: FTR vs. Jay Lethal & Jeff Jarrett w/ Mark Briscoe as special guest referee

Rolling along with our AEW Double or Nothing results, we get the champs versus Jarrett and Lethal who are accompanied by Karen Jarrett, Sonjay Dutt and Satnam Singh.  I will say that Mark Briscoe in this did a great job as the special guest referee.  He caught the fake tag and all.  He ejected Sonjay Dutt and Satnam Singh from ringside.  Being in attendance, Karen Jarrett knows how to get heat from the crowd and the crowd was letting her know how they felt about her.

Jeff is in the ring with one of two guitars brought down to the ring and goes to hit Dax but he ducks and Mark Briscoe takes the shot… Boom he is out.  I will say to this day and age how when wrestling, these guys can take chair shots and hit the steps but as referee they lose it all and a guitar shot puts them out cold.  Jay Lethal goes for Lethal Injection but it is countered with a Shatter Machine Big Rig but no ref for the count.  Aubrey Edwards is making her way down and Sonjay is back and blocking her from getting in the ring, she finally gets by and BOOM Karen wallops Aubrey with the guitar.  No referee leads to more shenanigans with the belts as Karen grabs them and gives them to Jeff.  Jarrett blasts Dax with the belt and Briscoe starts to wake up with help from Sonjay Dutt.  He counts and Dax kicks out at two.  Jarrett starts yelling at Briscoe and FTR nail him with the Big Rig and the pin 1, 2, 3…..  Your winners AND STILL Tag Team Champions FTR.  FTR Retaining moves us to 4-0 in our predictions.

AEW TNT Championship Ladder Match: Wardlow vs. Christian Cage

We were not sure what to expect from this one, it could be good it could have been a stinker.  Well, I am here to tell you it was shockingly good.  Christian plays an amazing sneaky slimy heel very well and it showed in this match.  There were some really cool spots in this one.  During the match Luchasaurus and AA made their ways back to the ring.  At one point Arn bit Luchasaurus on the thumb leaving it bloody and Wardlow hits the dinosaur with a chair shot and laid him across some tables on the outside.  He grabs a huge ladder and makes the climb to the top.  That is a lot of man on top of that ladder and the refs are holding the bottom to make sure he doesn’t fall.  Senton Atomico off the top of the ladder.  HOLY SHIT!  Everyone is down and Christian peeks up and makes his way into the ring to climb a ladder to grab the belt.  Wardlow gets in and gets him and drops him with a powerbomb, he makes his way up the ladder and grabs the title to retain the TNT Championship.  We took our first loss here and move to 4-1 on the night.

I would like to interject here with an observation while at the event speaking of the title.  At the merch stand, they were selling t-shirts for 50 bucks a piece and the TNT title I saw was $700.  I was blown away by these prices.  Way too much for the merch at the show.  I mean shirts on their site are 30 bucks and the TNT title is 600 so thats a hefty markup for bringing it to the show.  Anyway off of my soap box and back to our AEW Double or Nothing results.

AEW Women’s World Championship: Jamie Hayter vs. Toni Storm

This is another match we weren’t sure what we were going to get as Hayter is injured legitimately.  Well we didn’t have to wait long to find out, Toni was in the ring and Jamie didn’t come out.  Finally she gets tossed out by The Outcasts and they are working on her injured arm.  They get her in the ring and the ref starts the match.  Britt Baker comes at and goes after Saraya and they run off, Shida comes out with a kendo stick and runs off Ruby Soho.  It looked like Hayter was going to be able to muster this one out but the injury was just too much for her and Storm hits the Storm Zero for the pin and is finally crowned AEW Women’s World Champion.  It is Toni time once again and we had that pick moving us to 5-1 for the event.

House of Black vs…..

Well do we get points for having this one pegged as House of Black versus the Acclaimed and Billy Gunn?  Max Caster had a great rap on the way to the ring and there is one thing for sure, Everybody Loves The Acclaimed…..  This really was a solid match all the way through, both teams really showed out on this one.  It took us a while to get Daddy Ass in the ring but the pop for him was huge!  Billy took some chops from Brody (I wouldn’t want to take those) and gives him the finger and hits him with a Fameasser.  He hits Buddy with one also but Malakai is behind him and boom Black Mass on Daddy Ass for the pin and still your Trios champs the House of Black.  We pegged this one and said the House always wins in Vegas moving us to 6-1 for the night with three matches to go.

AEW TBS Championship: Jade Cargill vs. Taya Valkyrie

Next up in our Double or Nothing results is the match between Jade and Taya.  This was a good match for both of these ladies.  It looked like Taya was building momentum and the streak was about to be over.  She hit a spear on Jade and then a Road to Valhalla but Cargill kicks out.  Jade gets Taya setup and hits the Jaded.  I immediately assumed kick out here but Taya took the L and Cargill retains.  Mark Sterling gets in the ring and they flash a huge 60-0 on the tron.  He says that she has dominated everyone put in front of her and is prepared to fight any time, any place but there is nobody left.  Music hits and Kris Statlander is back and she is going to take on Jade right now.  Ring the bell….

Statlander immediately goes after Cargill with kicks and elbows.  Cargill blocks a suplex and nails Statlander with a kick.  Setting her up for Jaded but it is blocked.  Cradle Tombstone Piledriver and the ref counts 1, 2, 3…. Your new AEW TBS Champion Kris Statlander.  I was not ready for her to return but the crowd was pretty hyped up for her coming out.  Cargill retaining against Taya brings us to 6-2 for the night.

AEW World Championship: MJF vs. Sammy Guevara vs. “Jungle Boy” Jack Perry vs. Darby Allin

Let me start off saying this match was great.  By far the match of the night!  Everyone really got their stuff in and looked great wrestling.  Sammy Guevara put on an amazing show of high flying capping it off with a Spanish Fly on Darby from the top rope to the outside onto Jungle Boy and MJF.  There was a human centipede moment in this one when everyone had everyone in a submission hold.  MJF is amazing as a cocky heel and really put in work in this match.  It looked like a possible Jungle Boy heel turn as he was in the ring with the title and Darby was across the ring.  He refuses to use the belt and they go at it.  Sammy hits a GTH on Jungle Boy and heads to the top but is blasted to the outside by Darby.  He sets up for a coffin drop on Jack but MJF slides in places the Triple B on Perry and Darby coffin drops right onto the belt.  MJF picks him up, headlock takeover for the pin AND STILL your AEW World Champion MJF.  MJF with the win brings us to 7-2 for the night with one match left in our Double or Nothing results.

Anarchy in the Arena: BCC vs. The Elite

The Elite are the first out and the BCC come through the crowd.  The Elite exit the ring and head up to meet them.  The band is still playing at the top of the stage.  A constant barrage of fists and kicks and Wild Thing blaring through the arena.  Finally they make their way back down from in the crowd.  In the ring, Hangman and Danielson are there and Hangman takes off the eye patch to show he is all healed up but is immediately taken down by Yuta and him and Danielson immediately stomp him down.  The Bucks are brawling up the ramp to the stage with Daniel and Claudio and the band is still going strong.  They take out Danielson and Claudio and the lead singer opens up his jacket to show a BCC short and is immediately hit with a Superkick in stereo by the Young Bucks.  That ended the bands night.  The rest of the band leaves and the singer is just laying there.  Finally dragged off later by production.

Eventually we get Claudio outside with Matt Jackson and Claudio hits a piledriver in the bed of a pickup truck.  We have barbed wire, forks and finally thumbtacks hit the ring.  Matt Jackson stumbles back to the ring, Yuta has a crossface on Nick while Mox has a Boston Crab on him and Matt kicks Mox int he face with an exploding Jordan.  The shoe comes off as he is being beaten down in the corner and Claudio punts it into the audience.  Security immediately get it back to a chorus of Boos from the crowd.  With a shoeless foot, Matt steps on the thumbtacks and his whole heel is full.  Then a handful is put in his mouth and a massive uppercut from Claudio as thumbtacks fly from the bloody orifice.  The tides seem to be turning as it appears Omega has a second wind and Don Callis hits the ring he is confronted by Omega and a masked man slides in the ring and nails a big knee on Omega.  He removes the mask and it is Konosuke Takeshita.  He has turned on his friend.  Yuta immediately gets to work with a screwdriver to the head of Omega and puts a pin on Omega.  Your winners the BCC.  It looks like this battle between the groups will continue a bit longer as after the show went off the air, Omega grabbed a mic and said he has 1 or 2 friends left to help them.  With this we end our night at 7-3 in our predictions and total of 13-4 over the two events.

Reaction

Overall the show had some highs and some lows.  The Hardy match was a big low even though it was the buy-in.  Of the nine matches on the main card the worst would have to be Adam Cole vs. Chris Jericho.  The Cole Jericho match was a dud after the first few minutes of it.  The crowd just lost all interest in that one.  The four pillars match as I said was the match of the night, Wardlow Christian was a solid match and the FTR versus Lethal and Jarrett match was terrific with the story telling.  The Anarchy in the Arena match was difficult at times to follow as people were on the stage, outside, in the ring and all over the arena but a solid match none the less.  I am shocked at the only big return/surprise was Statlander coming back and of course the Takeshita heel turn.  Overall I would say it was a good event by AEW, but they typically do produce good Pay Per View events.  Definitely not their best but a good event.
