Microsoft Hedging Its Bets On Bethesda and Starfield

This weekend Microsoft held their Games Showcase for everyone to see what is coming for the Xbox Series.  Following the showcase, Microsoft Bethesda held a 45 minute long direct on the upcoming game Starfield.  There was a lot discussed during it and it is very apparent that Microsoft is hedging its bets on this game, from special editions to limited edition gear and more, they are all in on Starfield.

During the Starfield direct and in interviews with IGN, we learned from Todd Howard that Starfield will be locked to 30fps on Xbox Series S and X.  The game runs in 4K on the Series X and at in 1440p on the S but the locked 30fps is to ensure consistency of performance.  Todd Howard said, “I think it’ll come as no surprise, given our previous games, what we go for, Always these huge, open worlds, fully dynamic, hyper detail where anything can happen.  And we do want to do that.  It’s 4K in the X.  It’s 1440 on the S.  We do lock it at 30, because we want that fidelity, we want all that stuff.  We don’t want to sacrifice any of it.”  He did note that the game is running great and on PC it can run above 30fps, sometimes reaching 60fps.

Speaking of PC, Microsoft and Bethesda released the PC Specs for Starfield:

Minimum Specs

  • OS – Windows 10 version 22H2
  • Processor – AMD Ryzen 5 2600X or Intel Core i7-6800k
  • Memory – 16 GB Ram
  • Graphics – AMD Radeon RX 5700 or NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti
  • DirectX – Version 12
  • Storage – 125 GB available space (SSD Required)
  • Broadband Internet Connection

Recommended Specs:

  • OS – Windows 10/11 with updates
  • Processor – AMD Ryzen 5 3600X or Intel i5-10600K
  • Memory – 16 GB Ram
  • Graphics – AMD Ryzen RX 6800 XT or NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080
  • DirectX – Version 12
  • Storage – 125 GB available space (SSD Required)

Looking at these requirements to play on PC, 125 GB is a massive game.  Starfield does have more than 1,000 planets that can be explored.  Lead landscape artist Matt Carofano said that “In every one of our games, we always put so much care into all those little details that breathe life into our worlds… we want to give you freedom on a galactic level, A freedom to experience both the exciting planets and the quiet ones.”

Microsoft and Bethesda are launching Starfield into our galaxies on September 6th and with it there will be special editions and accessories that can be purchased as well.  Microsoft did announce a Special Edition Controller and Headset for the game:
