Microsoft Shutting Down Mixer – Moving to Facebook

Less than a year after making a splash in the game streaming industry by prying Ninja away from rival streaming service Twitch, Microsoft is shutting down Mixer.

Microsoft announced today that the company is shutting down the streaming platform Mixer on July 22nd of this year and that they will be partnering with Facebook Gaming moving forward.  They are using this as an attempt to expand their audience base.  Effective on July 22nd, all Mixer sites will forward to Facebook Gaming.  Phil Spencer, head of Xbox said, “It became clear that the time needed to grow our own live-streaming community to scale was out of measure with the vision and experiences we want to deliver to gamers now.”  Here is the tweet that Mixer released

This really came as a surprise to some as Microsoft had been pumping a ton of cash into the platform.  Especially after the addition of Ninja.  At the time, the rumor was that his deal with Microsoft was about 20 to 30 million dollars.  King Gothalion has already jumped on board the Facebook platform and released the following short video about his account being on Facebook, FB.GG/KINGGOTHALION

While Ninja and Shroud have not committed yet to joining Facebook.  It appears that contract streamers will basically have the option to join Facebook Gaming or become free agents and can choose to go to whichever platform they choose.  Will we see Ninja return to twitch?  While streaming on Twitch, he had 14.7 million followers and currently has just over 3 million followers on Mixer.
