AEW Dynamite March 23 Recap and Review

AEW Dynamite came to us tonight from the H-E-B Center in Cedar Park Texas.  We had a jam packed two hours of wrestling to feast on and breakdown tonight.  Let’s get to it!

Dynamite opens up and we get welcomed to Cedar Park Texas by JR, Tony Schiavone and the masked one Excalibur.  Cult of Personality immediately comes through the Speakers and CM Punk making his way to the ring for his first action since his dog collar match against MJF.

CM Punk vs. Dax Harwood

Punk is taking on Dax Harwood who we all know as a tag team wrestler from FTR.  Initially Cash Wheeler stayed in the back but with the Gunn club ringside, he soon came out.  The two have a solid match with some nice back and forths between them.  The crowd seemed pumped and into the show right from the beginning.  Dax showed some skills with a nice super-plex on Punk.  Punk went for the GTS but Dax landed on his feet and locked in the sharpshooter on Punk.  CM Punk rolls out and moves into the Anaconda Vice and Dax taps out.  Very solid opening match and punk again motions to the crowd he wants a title.  Will we see a CM Punk title run?

After the match we see a photo of Chris Jericho and a young John Silver.  The Jericho Appreciation Society in back stage and Jericho says what a feel good story it is for John Silver and that being in the ring with Jericho tonight puts him on a different level but not on Jericho’s level.  Jericho says the are going to future endeavor Silver and Reynolds just like the “traitors” Ortiz and Santana and that “piece of trash” Eddie Kingston.

Sting, Darby Allin & The Hardys vs. Private Party, the Butcher and the Blade

We have an 8 man tornado tag team match and immediately Darby dives throught the ropes and Takes out the Butcher.  The Stinger, who is absolutely amazing doing what he is doing, goes to the top and dives off and lays out the other three members of the team.  This match was absolutely nuts in certain spots.  We saw the Butcher throw Darby down a flight of stairs and the Maniac Jeff Hardy climb a huge ladder to a ledge above the merchandise stand and nails the Butcher and Blade with a huge swanton bomb through a some tables.  In the ring, Sting gets hit in the back with a chair shot and does his mini Hogan no sell of pounding his chest.  Private Party goes for Gin & Juice but Sting blocks and catches Kassidy in a choke hold, Matt has Marq in position for a Twist of Fate and boom side by side moves.  They get the pin and your winners are the team of The Hardys, Sting and Darby.

Backstage and FTR are with Tony Schiavione.  They are calling out the “Ass Boys”, telling them that they are not going to take the spot of the best tag team in the work.  They say they use their daddy’s name to build themselves up and says they will see them next Wednesday…. Top Guys out

We are two matches in this weeks AEW Dynamite and it has been non-stop action.

Jon Moxley & Brian Danielson vs. The Varsity Blonds

All four of the combatants start to brawl.  The legal men are The American Dragon and Pillman.  This one was a pretty one sided match and ends with some stomps on Pillman by Danielson and a Labell Lock submission for the win.

After the match Lord Steve (William Regal) comes to the ring.  Moxley says through blood, sweat and broken bones he has earned the Blackpool Seal of Approval and wears it with pride.  He issues a challenge and says if you’ve got what it takes to get a badge of honor from the Blackpool Combat Club, you have to get it the hard way.

Next up on AEW Dynamite we get MJF on the stick in the ring.  He is with Spears and there is security at ringside to protect them.  He tells us that Punk cheated at Revolution and says he does not know when or where but they will have a rematch.  Their feud wont be over until he attends CM Punks funeral and pisses on his grave.  He then focuses on Wardlow and says he is now a pig who is owned by MJF.  He says some disparaging remarks about Wardlow’s mother and Wardlow comes out.  He starts taking out “security” at ringside but is finally restrained.  I see where this is going with the mentions of Wardlow signed to MJF and not AEW, I see a match coming up for Wardlow’s freedom from his contract.

We get a segment with Wheeler Yuta, Trent Barretta, Chucky Taylor and Orange Cassidy aka Hands in Pockets Guy (the nickname from a non wrestling fan friend of mine).  Wheeler starts talking about what happened with William Regal last week and is interrupted by Trent Barretta sayinfg he never really liked him.  Wheeler says he loves Chuck and Orange Cassidy but he never liked him and he is not trying to be the best friend he can be but the best wrestler he can be.

Adam Cole vs. Jay Lethal

AEW Dynamite opens up with a match that should be a crowd favorite.  The crowd is into this match with some “let’s go Cole, let’s go Lethal” chants.  This was an action packed match and Lethal hit Cole with quite a few dives.  reDRagon makes their way out and Lethal mean mugs them on the ramp.  O’Reilly and Fish eventually make their way down to the ring and distract Lethal as Cole goes for a roll-up.  Cole lands a mean super-kick on Lethal and goes for The Boom but it is countered into a cutter (really a move too many people use now), goes for Lethal Injection and it is countered with another super-kick.  We get another reDRagon distraction and a low blow from Cole, hits The Boom and gets the three count.  Another solid match on this episode of AEW Dynamite.

Cole grabs a mic and says no one deserves the AEW World Championship more than him and Hangman stole the win from him at Revolution.  He sees fear in the eyes of Page and Page knows he is the rightful World Champ.  Hangman hits the ring takes of his belt and whips Cole and O’Reilly and ends up getting a low blow from Cole.  Jungle Boy, Luchasaurus and Christian hit the ring and Cole and reDRagon retreat.

After a commercial break, we are back in the ring with Sammy Guevara and Tay Conti.  Conti grabs the mic and calls out 12 Gauge Paige VanZant and Dan Lambert makes his way out with Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky.  Looks like Guevara and Conti are not done yet with the American Top Team.

Red Velvet vs. Leyla Hirsch

Kris Statlander was barred from ringside for this one.  They battle outside the ring before the bell sounds and finally make it into the ring.  Red Velvet hits the Final Slice on Leyla but she rolls out of the ring before she can get pinned.  Hirsch grabs a turnbuckle outside the ring and goes to hit Velvet with it.  Bryce Remsburg takes it away and goes to toss it out and she pulls another from her tights and hits Velvet with it for the pin.  Hirsch isn’t done and locks in an arm bar after the match and Kris Statlander comes hauling ass to the ring to make the save.

We get a backstage segment with Jade Cargill and Smart Mark Sterling planning her celebration for her 30-0 start in AEW.

Next up on AEW Dynamite we are with Tony and Thunder Rosa.  She is interrupted by a loud shrilly excuse me and out comes Vickie Guerrero.  Guerrero says Thunder Rosa is not a Texan and can take her fake green card back to Mexico.  Thunder starts to say she got her citizenship in the state of Texas and is attacked from the back by Nyla Rose.  Vickie says Nyla is hungrier and thirstier for that title and is a true champ.

Jericho Appreciation Society (Jericho and Daniel Garcia) vs. Dark Order members John Silver and Alex Reynolds

Jericho attacks Silver immediately as the bell sounds. They head to the outside and Silver and Reynolds hit a suicide dive brainbuster combination.  Ref Aubrey ejects the Dark Order from ringside.  Silver starts tossing out elbows and takes out the Jericho Appreciation Society.  Eventually we get a cheap shot from Floyd and Daniel Garcia slaps the Sharpshooter on Alex Reynolds for the win.

Overall this was a pretty good episode of AEW Dynamite.  The matches were good, they weren’t overly long and had good action.  The match of the night for me was the Tornado Tag Team match as it is amazing to see the Stinger do what is doing in AEW.  What was your favorite part of the show?  You can always interact with us here at Culture Splat or on our Twitter as we love to interact with our readers.
