Atari Unveils Massive Atari VCS Operating System Update

Atari has announced today that they have released the latest update to their Atari VCS Operating System.  This is continuing in the companies commitment to steadily adding new and highly-requested and Quality-of-Life features to the living room mini-PC.

The update to the operating system which is available to all users now adds online Leaderboards, public “Friends” Profiles, dashboard notifications, expanded support for developers as well as several other system optimization features.

Leaderboards will track and compare scores across your favorite Atari titles.  You will be able to see how you stack up against the rest of the VCS community.  The first titles this will apply to  are the Recharged series of games which is Black Widow, Asteroids and Breakout.  The Atari VCS supports Daily, weekly and monthly leaderboard across regions and globally.

Public “Friends” Profiles is an enhancement to the friends system which includes expanded public profiles that make it easier to discover and connect with other players.

DIY Developer Private Beta allows for every Atari VCS system to be turned into a developers kit.  This will make it easier for developers to create content for the Atari VCS and creates a pathway for homebrew developers to create games and apps for themselves and eventually share that content.

Another update in the update to the operating system is an update to the Stella Atari 2600 emulator.  It is now fully integrated with the Atari VCS Operating System.  This makes bringing classic and new third-party 2600 titles to the VCS Storefront easy.  Owners can expect 2600 titles to join the expanded collection of retro titles.

Some other items which do get an update in the Atari VCS Operating system are dashboard notifications, USB camera support and new Customer Support Tools.

  1. I sent a feedback about the Atari VCS not having Family profile on it to Airtable. For those who don’t know, it’s the ability to buy a game online and all profiles/avatar’s depending on the system, can play the game. On the VCS only one profile can play a game unless you buy it for every profile on that system. This will be the 3rd time I’ve submitted this to Atari. I hope something happens this time or I’ll have to sell my VCS. I hurts me to say that since I’ve been a supporter since the name Atari Box was announced.
