In November, The Coalition and Netflix announced they were partnering to develop a Gears of War movie as well as an adult animated series with the possibility of an expanding universe to follow. Today Netflix announced that they have partnered with Jon Spaihts, writer of Dune and the upcoming Dune: Part Two as well as Doctor Strange, to write the movie.

Gears of War officially released on the Xbox 360 on November 7, 2006. The video game series was created by Epic Games, developed by The Coalition and is owned by Xbox Game Studios is a fierce third-person shooter where the player, playing as Marcus Fenix, would unleash hell on the Locust Horde. Let me just toss this out there, Dave Bautista has wanted to play the role of Marcus Fenix and I can’t think of anyone better to play that role. Just take a look at his tweet from November 10, 2022.

Yeah, I say he was built for this role! In an article on Variety Spaihts had the following to say, “’Gears of War’ is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates, It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”
The Coalition further had this to say, “We’re thrilled to partner with Jon and the Netflix team to bring ‘Gears of War’ to life, Jon is a master storyteller with a talent for creating epic, science-fiction universes, and he truly loves ‘Gears of War.’ We couldn’t ask for a better partner to honor our franchise and deliver an authentic story to our fans.”
The Gears of War Movie is the second Microsoft IP to get pulled off the console and onto the screen following the Paramount+ Halo TV Series.
