PlayStation Portal – PS5 Remote Play Handheld is $199

We saw it back in May during the Sony PlayStation Showcase and today it has become official with a price tag of $199.  Sony is “back in the handheld business” with the new Sony PlayStation Portal.  This device which was previously code named Project Q is a remote player for your PlayStation 5.  So what is the PlayStation Portal you may ask, well my friends in my opinion it is a waste of $200 unless Sony expands the usefulness of the device.  In their blog post, Sony states that PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house.  PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi**, so you’ll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal.

The device uses Sony’s Remote Play feature, which has been around for a while, to play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console.

The device looks like a DualSense controller was split down the middle and a screen was popped in there.  The screen is an 8 inch LCD capable of 1080p 60fps gaming, the PlayStation Portal will include full features of the DualSense controller which includes adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

What is your use case for a device like this?  Unlike the Nintendo Switch or the Steam Deck, which by the way has an app for remote play from a PS5 on it, this cannot play games locally and all must be streamed so traveling on a plane or in a car going somewhere this is not the device for you.  This is a device where it needs that internet connection and your PS5 connect as well, if you are at a hotel or on vacation where there is Wi-Fi, Sony recommends Internet with at least 5Mbps but that 15Mbps is ideal, you can play games from your house.

Alongside the PlayStation Portal, Sony also announced the Pulse Elilte wireless headset and the Pulse Explore wireless earbuds.  The Pulse Elite is the new wireless headset from Sony which they state offers lossless audio and comes with a retractable boom mic and AI-enhanced noise rejection capable of filtering background sounds.  It also comes with a charging hanger.  The Pulse Explore are Sony’s first set of wireless earbuds that provide a premium portable audio experience with dual microphones and AI-enhanced noise rejection as well.  These will be the first PlayStation devices to use custom-designed planar magnetic drivers.  The Pulse Elite will run $149 USD and the Pulse Explore will run $199 USD.
