CM Punk Released From AEW

CM Punk has been released from AEW effective today.  This comes less than a week after both him and Jack Perry were suspended due to their backstage confrontation at All In.  There has been no news on Jack Perry, but Punk is now gone from AEW.

Based on the rumors coming out of the aftermath of the squabble at All In, and we know there have been many of them, Punk had threatened to quit AEW but after Samoa Joe calmed him down, they went on ahead with their “Real” World Championship match.  Afterwards, the news was that there was little to no communication between CM Punk and AEW or Tony Khan which was much different than the norm.  Punk had been informed of his suspension through his attorney.  Today’s announcement came via the offical AEW account on Twitter and Khan said:

“Phil played an important role within AEW and I thank him for his contributions.  The termination of his AEW contracts with cause is ultimately my decision, and mine alone.  Of course, I wish I didn’t have to share this news, which may come as a disappointment to many of our fans.  Nevertheless, I am making the decision in the best interests of the many amazing people who make AEW possible every week = our talent, staff, venue operators and many others whose efforts are unsung but essential to bringing our fans great shows on television and at arenas and stadiums throughout the world.”

This announcement comes just a few short hours prior to Collision which has been deemed Punks show in his hometown of Chicago.  This also comes the day before All Out, also in Chicago.  I have a feeling that the fans will let AEW and Tony Khan know how they feel about this decision.  From the outside looking in, his run in AEW has been less than stellar with a few injuries and one or two suspensions as we never really got told what happened after the Brawl out last year.  This leaves CM Punk fans to think what if…  What if the drama wasn’t there, what if he never got injured, what if he just went there did his job and went home at the end of the night and didn’t get involved in backstage politics?

What is your take on CM Punk being released by AEW and Tony Khan’s statement?  What do you think the crowd will be like tonight and tomorrow?  Will they try and hijack the show?  What do you think about Punks run in AEW?  Let us know in the comments below or hit us up on our Twitter account.  As always stay tuned to Culture Splat for more content coming your way!
