Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 Spoiler Free Review

This morning I headed over to my local Majestic Neighborhood Cinema Grill (these were part of the Alamo Drafthouse chain but they have left the Phoenix area).  For those of you in the Phoenix area, I recommend checking them out.  I was able to check out Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 at a 9:30am showing and went in assuming it would be empty but there were quite a few people there.  Anyway enough about the experience of watching it on to the Guardians Spoiler free review.

First let me start off by saying, going in I had stayed away from whatever was floating about the internet to spoiler it for me, so I am trying to keep the secrets for you as well.  The film is rated PG-13 and has a run time of 149 minutes.  I was shocked when I left the theater after everything and it was nearly 3 hours from start to driving away, luckily it didn’t feel long at all.  Going into this film, it has been well documented that this will be the last film of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy and the film provides a nice tidy bow on top of the James Gunn trilogy.

Series mainstays Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket.  Joining our team is Sean Gunn as Kraglin and Maria Bakalova as Cosmo the Spacedog with Chukwudi Iwuji as the big bad The High Evolutionary.  Elizabeth Debicki returns as Ayesha from the Sovereign and is joined by Will Poulter as Adam Warlock.  I will leave the guest appearances and other details for a follow up post.

Before digging into the film any deeper, I must say that I really enjoyed this one and it felt like a return to form for the MCU, which had felt very disjointed and off during Phase 4 and even with Quantumania.  This film has been years in the making with the firing of Gunn and the cast banding together to get him back.  You could feel the love that Gunn has for this franchise and these characters.  The cast from top to bottom gave amazing performances and you got to feel the passion for each of the characters and we got to get more about most of them without it being about them which was great.  Chukwudi Iwuji was amazing as the maniacal High Evolutionary.  He almost portrayed him too well… He brings to the character a feeling that you immediately hate him and he shows no compassion for any of his creations.  His performance steals the scene pretty much every time he is on camera.  Plus he is the poster child for animal cruelty so there is that too!  Our main cast was amazing as always and Bradley Cooper was the best Rocket I feel yet in the MCU.

Let’s start with the visuals.  The visuals of the film were amazing as is customary for a Guardians movie.  The colors helped set the tone and emotions of the characters at times.  The sets and visual effects were spot on, unlike some recent Marvel releases.  From the fight scenes, side note there is a hallway fight that was done in one take and is absolutely amazing, to the characters and everything in between, the images are crisp and terrific.  The story of the film really draws you in as well and has all the feels you want for the team, from love to friendship and caring for each other it is all there for you.

I would be remiss if I didnt speak about the soundtrack, because they are basically a cast member in the Guardians films.  The film had everything from “In the Meantime” by Spacehog to “No Sleep till Brooklyn” by one of my favorite groups of all time, the Beastie Boys.

So my final thoughts, this is probably the best Marvel movie since Avengers Endgame.  Is this the end of the Guardians of the Galaxy?  This group yes, but I am sure we will see some of the characters back somehow. The film didn’t feel like it was here to build into other upcoming projects, it was an ode by James Gunn to this cast and the fans and concludes his story of the team.  Well done to the whole team!  This film gets 4 out of 5 splats, a very solid showing and return to form for the MCU!
