WWE Extreme Rules Recap and Review

Last night the WWE presented The Horror Show at Extreme Rules.  For the most part this thing was an absolute horror show!  Here is our WWE The Horror Show at Extreme Rules recap!

The event came to us from the Performance Center is Orlando, Florida as we have grown accustom to with the ongoing pandemic in the US.  Like I said in our preview of the event yesterday, when you have a PPV like Extreme Rules or TLC I feel every match should have a stipulation to it.  This event had 1 preshow match between Kevin Owens and Buddy Murphy and 7 main card matches.

Kevin Owens vs. Buddy Murphy

This match was one of the better ones of the night.  I am a huge fan of Kevin Owens and Buddy Murphy and really feel sorry that they have not been used correctly.  Watching this match makes me think how good a series with them could have been in NXT with proper booking.  Here they seem to be an after thought of the system.  I really enjoyed this match as they both put on some terrific moves throughout.  Murphy has a great ripcord knee that he delivers.  In the end Owens won via stunner and after the match told Murphy he is too good to be following Seth Rollins.

SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match – The New Day (c) vs. Cesaro and Nakamura Table Match

During the preshow the New Day reached out to table veteran D-Von Dudley to ask about tables and were given the impressive knowledge that you must put your opponent through a table.  This match went off pretty well with the teams really having a nice back and forth between them.  There were some near misses on tables and awesome moves.  The ending of a Nakamura assisted Cesaro powerbomb off the ropes through two tables onto the floor on Kofi was one hell of a move.  That was some bump that Kingston took there as he was left in a pile of debris as Cesaro and The Artist won the Tag Titles!  If you can watch just one match on this card, I highly suggest it is this one!!!

SmackDown Women’s Championship Match – Bayley (c) vs. Nikki Cross

Before this match took place, we see Cross backstage with Bliss, Asuka and Kairi Sane and they are giving her words of encouragement to pump her up for the match.  She makes her way out with Bliss in her corner to take on Bayley Dos Straps with Sasha Banks in her corner.  This was a really good match between the two women with both getting some solid moves in.  It looked like Nikki was going to pull out the win but Banks handed Bayley her Boss four finger ring and they were used like Brass Knuckles on Cross right to the ribs.  In the end Bayley Dos Straps keeps her title but it would not be the last time we see her on this night.

United States Championship Match – Apollo Crews (c) vs. MVP

It was announced that Crews had an injury stemming from when he was attacked by Bobby Lashley and would not be able to compete.  With that said, MVP put that new ugly US Title around his waist and declared himself champion via forfeit.  Everyone made it clear this was not official and we got no match.  I am sure now with MVP declaring himself the champ we will have a champ vs. champ match to unify the title at Summer Slam.

Eye for an Eye Match – Seth Rollins vs. Rey Mysterio

I went into this match not expecting much, maybe some CGI of an eye coming out or some interference preventing it, I never expected what we did get!  Rollins made his way out to the ring with some tools for surgery on Mysterio.  He had a pliers and other tools with him.  The match went off and immediately they were going after each other with Kendo sticks and everything else.  Rey actually took apart a kendo stick and had parts from it and went after Rollins eye.  The match was moving along, and I wasnt that into it because I was just expecting the swerve or some cheesy Sci-Fi channel transformers knock off CGI.  They were both at the steps on the corner of the ring and Rollins pushed Mysterio’s head/eye into the corner of the steps and walked away as Rey was writing in pain on the ground.  Samoa Joe on commentary said that it’s out and we see Mysterio with his hands over his face and see what looks like a gumball in his mask being held in with his hands.  For those that missed it, here you go!

Rey was walked to the back and Rollins was shown throwing up ringside from what he had done.  This was just awful!!!!!!  Moving on with our WWE Extreme Rules Recap……

Raw Women’s Championship Match – Asuka (c) vs. Sasha Banks

Asuka was accompanied by her tag team partner Kairi Sane and Banks was accompanied by Bayley Dos Straps.  These two really battled in this match.  Asuka and Banks were excellent and I think Banks is not given enough credit for her in-ring work.  Asuka was able to get Sasha in the Asuka lock and Banks tapped out but the ref was distracted by Bayley and didn’t see the tap.  Eventually Asuka went for the green mist and Banks ducked and the ref caught it right in the face, Asuka got hit in the back with the belt and Bayley ripped the shirt off the ref and counted to three on Asuka.  Banks grabbed the belt and left.  I am sure tonight we will find out if this is legit or what is going to happen here with the Raw title!

WWE Championship Match – Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Dolph Ziggler

This one we had to wait to hear the stipulations after the combatants were announced.  Ziggler grabs the mic and says that it is an Extreme Rules match for just Dolph Ziggler and also if McIntyre was DQ’d or counted out Ziggler would win the title.  I was behind the stipulation for this one as it will play up the heel in Ziggler.  The match started off heavy in Drew’s favor but Ziggler was able to weather the storm and use his stipulation to his advantage.  Ziggler hit a ton of moves on McIntyre but in the end a claymore kick put Ziggler out of his misery.  McIntyre retained the title.

Swamp Fight – Braun Strowman vs. Bray Wyatt

This match was hyped throughout the entire event.  We got some a haunted Firefly Fun House to open the PPV with Bray in a Dracula cape and some cinematic stuff throughout the event.  We are taken to the swamp and Braun rolls up in a Ford Raptor (awesome truck!) and Bray is in a rocking chair in the driveway of the swamp.  This was not the cinematic match I was expecting.  Braun fought off people in hoods and one of them even got lit on fire.  Alexa Bliss was calling to Braun dressed as sister abigail to come to her that he always wanted to be with her.  He was bitten by a snake attacked by his old self in the black sheep mask and then they took the fight to the swamp water.  At the end Braun seemed to have won and Brays hand came up to grab Braun with a mandible claw and drag him to the water.  The water started bubbling and turned red with the fiend rising up telling us to let him in.

That sums it up for our WWE Extreme Rules recap.  The event had some good spots and some really not good spots!  I was riding with the show up until the eye for and eye match and then it killed the mood for me.  The swamp fight put the nail in the coffin on this show for me as it wasn’t too good and really had an odd ending.  What did you think of the event?  Let us know you thoughts in the comments below on our WWE Extreme Rules Recap.  You can also hit us up on our Twitter account by clicking here.
