The Atari 2600 was originally released in September of 1977 and was originally branded as the Atari Video Computer System not to be confused with the new Atari VCS which was released in 2021 (which I still want to get and check out). Yars’ Revenge was created by Howard Scott Warshaw and was released in 1982. It is the best selling original game for the Atari 2600. In 2022 we are getting an updated version with Yars Recharged.
Yars: Recharged is the first title being released in the Recharged series that is based on a title that was conceived and developed exclusively for the console. The previous releases in the Recharged series were all originally released as arcade cabinets. The original Yars’ Revenge had two Atari 2600 sequels, the first Saboteur which was also by Howard Scott Warshaw and the second was a homebrew title by Curt Vendel. Yars: Recharged is a retro shooter that will be available for PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store as well as for console on the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, Nintendo Switch and of course the Atari VCS. You will be able to play as a single player as well as a local 2-player Co-op. The game has 2 modes, Arcade Mode and Missions.
- Arcade Mode – A boss rush of 30 enemies that is very difficult to get to the end of. You have 3 hits in your hit counter and then you die. If you pass a level, your hit counter resets back to three.
- Missions – You will have 30 unique missions with challenging bosses and only one life to beat each boss.
The basis of the story is a daring attack against the enemy homeworld that is guarded by mechanical hives that pulse deadly cannons and emit flurries of swirling missiles. Shoot from range as you find pockets of safety and then dart forward to nibble away at the enemies defenses. Gather enough energy and you can power up your Zorlon cannon that sends searing blasts of golden energy into the enemy hive.
