She-Hulk Episode 1 Recap and Review

Today is the day my friends.  She-Hulk Episode 1 has officially premiered on Disney+ and Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk is officially in the MCU.  Each week we will be taking a look at the episodes giving a recap and review of what we thought.  So if you have not yet watched the show, this is your spoiler warning!

She-Hulk Episode 1 Recap

The show starts off with Walters going over her closing arguments for a case she is working.  After she finishes and the dick lawyer leaves the room, her co-worker and friend Nikki casually mentions her being a Hulk.  As Jennifer is heading out of the office, she stops looks at us and says she will bring us up to speed so we can focus on “this fun lawyer show.”  We cut to her and Bruce in the car from the scene showed in trailers.  Bruce explains why he is human again (which helps explain where this fits in to the MCU timeline) and that is so his arm can heal after the snap to bring everyone back.  After they are cut off by a ship from Sakaar and crash.  This is where we deviate from the comic story of Bruce giving his cousin a blood transfusion, Bruce is bleeding following the accident and Jennifer is cut as well and his blood drips into her open wound creating She-Hulk.

Jennifer Hulks out and runs through the woods almost “Savagely.”  She wakes up and heads to a bar to clean up and is waiting for her ride to pick her up.  A few men try hitting on her and she Hulks out once again and she wakes up in Bruce’s beach front hideaway in Mexico.  Bruce works with Jennifer on being a Hulk and the responsibility that comes with it, as well as some of the fun things like not getting drunk because they metabolize the alcohol faster.  Walters wants to return to her “normal” life of being a regular lawyer and Bruce disagrees.  He basically gives her the Spidey line of with great power comes great responsibility.  Eventually they fight while she is trying to leave and they destroy his bar, he agrees she can leave and carry on with her life as a lawyer as she can control her hulking out.

Now that we are all caught up on the backstory, we are brought back to modern day in the court room.  Jennifer is about to deliver her closing arguments and Jameela Jamil’s character breaks into the courtroom through the wall.  Jen hulks out and punches Jameela Jamil knocking her out.  She puts her shoes back on, pulls up her ripped sleeve and says she is ready to deliver her closing now.  We cut to the credits.

There is an after credits scene based on the discussion she was having with Bruce about Captain America’s sex life.  Smart Hulk confirms that Captain America had sex in 1943 during a USO show.  With that line all I could think of was Silicon Valley…

Episode Review

Going into She-Hulk Episode 1, I was not sure of what to think of the show.  Phase 4 has been hit or miss, in my humble opinion.  By the end of the episode I can say that I am looking forward to seeing where they go with the character and the show.  I do like how they tied this into the blip and Bruce’s arm and that her blood was able to cure his issue and he is now back to Smart Hulk.  The fourth wall breaking was done very well and not shoe-horned in.  I am also looking forward to seeing how Abomination and Daredevil get brought into the show and if we see more of how Abomination ended up with Wong in Shang-Chi.
