Meg 2: The Trench Review

The Meg in 2018 took us by storm and provided an enjoyable large shark movie for us to watch.  There was danger, love and more in that film.  Shortly after the success of the original, a sequel was green lit.  This past week we got that sequel in Meg 2: The Trench.  I watched the film and well let us just say that it is no where close to the original.  Spoiler warning ahead for those who have not seen it yet, or do not want to know what happens.

The Meg 2 sees the return of Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor, an expert diver, deep sea search and rescue and Meg killer extraordinaire, Cliff Curtis as Mac aka Jonas’ right hand man, Page Kennedy as DJ and Shuya Sophia Cai as Meiying Zhang.  Newcomers Wu Jing as Jiuming Zhang, Suyin’s brother, Skyler Samuels as Jess, Sienna Guillory as Hillary Driscoli, Melissanthi Mahut as Rigas and little bad (compared to the Megs) Sergio Peris-Mencheta as Montes.

The film does not feel very cohesive and kind of clunky from the beginning.  First we see the scene from the trailer of the meg eating the T-Rex and then we are taken to five years after the first movie.  Suyin (Li Bingbing) has passed away but there is no explanation of her death and we are just shown her as dying in 2021 based on a slide during a presentation.  Her brother is now in the picture and there is a meg in captivity akin to Jaws 3 (more on Jaws 3 later).  DJ and Mac are back on the team with Jonas but there is also no explanation of where Ruby Rose character Jaxx is as well as Jessica McNamee’s character Lori Taylor.  There is a new character taking Jaxx place in Skyler Samuels Jess who seems to be the teams new engineer.  The crew also still has Mana One as well as a new on land base where the captive Meg has been raised.

A lot has taken place over these five years, Hillary Driscoli (Sienna Guillory) is the new financial backer for their research but is secretly running a deep sea mining operation in the trench that is overseen by Montes.  After the Mana One team stumbled upon the mining during a dive into the trench followed by a now escaped from captivity meg, Montes blows up his own team to stop the Mana One researchers.  This explosion allows three megs along with other creatures to escape the trench.  After their escape, the megs and other escaped creatures are heading toward “fun island.”  During the attack on fun island, there is one scene that is so bad, it is a view from inside the megs mouth chomping down on swimmers and beach goers.  It is almost comical how terrible it looked.  It was very reminiscent of Jaws 3 when Jaws ate the diver in the pipe before being escaping.

Overall, the film was a disappointment following up the original.  I went into the film wanting to like it but just couldn’t.  Our rating for this film is 2 out of 5 splats.
