The new Marvel series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law is releasing a week from today on Disney+. This is the first time we are being introduced to the character in the MCU so we figured lets meet She-Hulk.
She-Hulk first appeared in the Marvel release The Savage She-Hulk #1 which was released in February 1980. The character was created by the late great legend Stan Lee and famed Marvel artist John Buscema. The character was created basically for Marvel to secure the rights to the character due to the success of the TV series The Incredible Hulk which ran from 1977 through 1982 with Bill Bixby playing Bruce Banner and famed body builder Lou Ferrigno playing the big green monster. They wanted to be sure they owned the rights in case the producers of the show would look to create a female led version of the show.
In the initial publication, the character starts out as a criminal defense attorney named Jennifer Walters. Walters is the cousin of the Hulk himself Dr. Bruce Banner, currently played by Mark Ruffalo in the MCU. In the comic, Bruce goes to his cousin and lets her know that he is a wanted man by the police and the army and tells her about him becoming the Hulk. On the drive to her home, she tells Bruce she is defending a criminal named Monkton who is accused of killing the bodyguard of Nick Trask. They are being tailed by two thugs and when they get to her home and get out of the car she is shot in the back by the thugs. Bruce sees that she has lost a lot of blood and she will need a transfusion and he gives her a transfusion with his gamma radiated blood. In the hospital recovering, she is attacked by Trasks men again and she hulks out sends them flying. We finally meet She-Hulk!
She-Hulk throughout the years has been a member of many teams including the Avengers, the Defenders and the Fantastic Four. Like our buddy Deadpool, she breaks the fourth wall and speaks to the readers of her comics. In fact she did this before Deadpool as he did not appear until February 1991 and she started this in her second comics series The Sensational She-Hulk starting in 1989. The character has appeared in many cartoon Marvel shows but as mentioned above next Thursdays series will be the first live action She-Hulk we will see. In the Disney+ series, the character will be played by Tatiana Maslany, known for her work on Orphan Black. It also stars Jameela Jamil as Titania, Ginger Gonzaga as Walters best friend Nikki Ramos, Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, the return of Tim Roth as Emil Blonksy/Abomination from the 2008 Phase 1 film The Incredible Hulk and the appearance of Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock/Daredevil in his second MCU appearance and first in the Daredevil suit. The show will be a 9 episode series starting Next Thursday August 18th on Disney+.
